Welcome,
This online exhibition was created to showcase the pictures that I am most proud of, pictures that I have taken and edited using Photoshop to enhance their appeal and improve their visual impact.  All of the pictures I have taken for this online exhibition share a common theme, that is they are all images are taken in Canberra in the suburb areas and share a urban feel.

I have also collected an assortment of images taken by other people from Flickr and compared them to my own work to see weather or not my image is effective and up to scratch with other works around Flickr.

 All Night Light
An Unreliable Witnesses Photo
The picture on the left was taken during the night so I used photohop to change the levels and brightness so that more detail can be seen. I then desaturated the image to dull the colour as the changing of the levels had given it a unrealistic look. The next step was to use the selective colour tool to increase the greens in the image to make the detail of the tree branches around it stand out more and also to give the image and over all slightly green tone.

The picture taken by An Unreliable Witness seems to have had similar things done to it, I think it is very effective and creates and interesting feel and the detail of the brickwork around the street lamp is sharp and not blurred. this could be because of skillful use of brightness, contrast and levels adjustment.

I link both these images and feel that An Unreliable Witnesses image is very strong, when searching Flickr for an image similar to mine his was by far the closest in physical appearance and feel / theme.
The urban / Night theme in both these pictures is clearly evident but probably more so in the one on the right. It has more urban brickwork background compared to a nature strip tree background which creates the backdrop along with the sky for My picture on the left.

Followed
DerrickT's Photo
For my Picture "followed" on the left I took it at a local shop front at night under artificial light which created a soft lit feel and helped illuminate the detail of the cloths despite the unlit dark night background, which actually helps limit the background by screening off everything behind the two figures, I also desaturated the image.

DerrickT's Photo on the right Has also been saturated, he has also used natural light and shot from shadow into light. A lot of detail is evident in this picture and the background is clearly visible and well lit. this image was probably taken during the day time, desaturated and had the lighting levels slightly adjusted.

DerrickT's Picture is very strong the staging is more sophisticated and the image is more interesting due to the background. it also has a creepy theme that i also went for that suggests someone may be being followed however it lacks the urban theme that mine has because it looks like it is set in a cottage or somewhere remote.

Waiting
Capitan-Patata's Photo
The "Waiting" picture i have created has been manipulated using the dodge and burn tool to create shadows and highlights, it also has had been colour edited witht he bench being re-coloured a dark brown. alot of the shadows are artificial and the whole image has been desaturated again although the original colours were very dull to begin with.

Capitan-Patata's Photo has been run through a filter to create a desaturated Sepia look, it is also a longer shot with a focus in the center, depending on the time of day it was taken it's light levels may of been adjusted.

Both images have a Urban feel and both cover clearly depict someone waiting, both images are strong but i feel mine has a more gritty feel where as Capitan-Patata's has made better use of light and colour manipulation to create a strong image.

Abandoned
R.f.m II's photo
For this image I desaturated the shot and adjusted the levels yet again to make a higher level of contrast between the gutter and the abandoned teddy bear. I took this picture during the day in natural light because there was not enough light to see any detail in the image once the sun had set.

R.f.m II's  Picture seems to have had no colour destauration manipulation work done to it, it does however seem that the light levels have been adjusted to increase the whitness and intensity of the light to exclude detail in the pictures background.

Both images seem to share the urbanized theme, with the teddy bear in the gutter and the dog behind a wire fence both looking sad and suggesting the same emotional message to the audience. R.f.m II's picture is strong because of the tightness of the frame and the good use of colour in contrast to dull metal.

Forgotten
 Swan-t's Photo
For my picture "Forgotten" I once again desaturated my image And adjusted the exposure to clean up the shadows to reveal detail. by increasing the contrast i was able to reveal keep shadows while exposing detail in lighter area's.

Swan-t's Photo is also desaturated  and has been taken in what is most probably direct sunlight  which has given a great contrast between light and shadow. This picture has made much more sophisticated use of levels and shot angle making it a very strong picture overall.

Both pictures share the theme of being forgotten or left behind / lost which helps in comparing the two the use of a urban or industrial background aids in creating a feeling of people being close by but not knowing where you are.

Descent

 Skinnyde's Photo

Once again I desaturated this image and adjusted the levels to keep the contrast between light and shadow controlled so as not to lose the detail of the brick work in the picture which is much of it's aesthetic appeal.

Both pictures work well at depicting a concrete set if stairs with a high level of detqail in the shadow and contrast department with my picture having a slightly darker mood with the comparrion picture having a more sophisticated architecture angle.

 Road to City
 Tricky tm's Photo
For this image I didn't completely remove all colour, I did however use selective colour, adjust the levels and lighting and exposure to keep foreground detail as well as keeping it dark enough to see background detail without washing it out resulting in careful use of contrast to create a better look for a badly lit photo.

Tricky tm's Photo is similar probably using the same tools but making much better use of them. The detail is high and consistent all the way through the picture and the theme is similar and well carried out. Both images depict similar thing but the background of mine makes it unmistakably urban.

 Night Crossing
 aNantaB's Photo
Desaturation again features in my photo with selective colouring resulting in increased yellow light throughout the entire picture.

aNataB's Photo has not desaturated the image and may have little photoshop editing applied to it, both images have common themes and carry them out well.
